Learn Erzya
Welcome!
The Erzya language is a Uralic language belonging to the Finno-Volgaic subgroup of the Finno-Ugric languages. It is closely related to the Moksha language, and in the past, these two were considered dialects of the so-called 'Mordvin language'.
In the 2021 Russian census, around 40,000 people identified Erzya as their native language, with the majority living in the Republic of Mordovia. Erzya is one of the official languages of the Republic of Mordovia, alongside Russian and Moksha. While the official Erzya alphabet is identical to the Russian alphabet, scientific literature often uses various Latin-based systems to represent the language.
Like all other Uralic languages, Erzya is an agglutinative language which expresses grammatical relations by means of suffixes.
